The Unchanging Rock
Scripture: Psalm 18:1-2
I don’t like heights. I don’t like suspension bridges. Honestly, I prefer solid ground under my feet. For many of us, life feels more like a suspension bridge than firm earth—full of instability and unexpected tremors. The loss of a loved one, a difficult medical diagnosis, or uncertainty about the future can leave us feeling shaken and overwhelmed.
But even when the ground beneath us shifts, there is One who remains firm.
“I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
— Psalm 18:1-2
King David knew what instability felt like—he lived it. Hunted by enemies, misunderstood by family, and overwhelmed by responsibilities. Yet in his chaos, he found his footing in God.
What David Knew That We Often Forget
David didn’t see God as a backup plan. God wasn’t his “Plan B.” He was his rock—his source, not just a resource.
David calls God by several powerful names:
Rock – Symbol of stability and permanence. David stood firm on God when all else gave way.
Fortress – A divine high tower, inaccessible to the enemy.
Deliverer – The one who doesn’t just defend—but rescues.
Refuge & Shield – Protection on all sides, especially during life’s toughest blows.
Horn of Salvation – A symbol of power and victory.
Stronghold – A fortified shelter, where David found rest and readiness for battle.
What This Means for Us
When our world feels unstable—politically, personally, spiritually—we’re tempted to panic or rely on our own strength. But Psalm 18 reminds us to stand in God’s strength, not our own. David’s declaration is also an invitation for us to do the same.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear…”
— Psalm 46:1-2
Making It Personal

Let God be your first call, not your last resort.
